WHAT IS THE ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT (OECD)?
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is a unique forum where the governments of 38 democracies and market economies work together to address economic, social, and governance challenges related to globalization, as well as to make the most of its opportunities.
The OECD began its operations in 1961 and aims to promote policies that foster prosperity, equality, opportunities, and well-being for all people.

38 member countries:
- Latin America (4): Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico.
- East Asia (2): Korea and Japan.
- Middle East (2): Israel and Türkiye
- North America (2): Canada and the United States.
- Oceania (2): Australia and New Zealand.
- Europe (26): Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Sweden, and Switzerland.
8 candidate countries for accession:
- Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Indonesia, Peru, Romania, and Thailand.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BELONG TO THE OECD?
The process of joining the OECD represents a great opportunity for Peru to undertake management and public policy reforms in various areas such as public governance, regulatory policy, integrity, environment, territorial development, trade, education, among others. These reforms are aimed at closing structural gaps and steering the country towards inclusive, equitable, sustainable, and resilient development.
Incorporating Peru into the OECD will involve:
- Improving and maintaining standards in the design and implementation of public policies.
- Participating in decision-making processes regarding public policy standards at the level of member countries.
- Enhancing legal frameworks and implementing best practices in public services.
- Receiving and providing training and technical assistance to improve public policies.
- Facilitating the flow of public and private investments to Peru.
THE OECD ACCESSION PROCESS
Peru is being evaluated by 24 OECD committees.
- PRODUCE serves as Peru’s official representative to the OECD Fisheries Committee (COFI).
- In line with its mandates, PRODUCE has also provided input on topics related to industry, micro, small, medium, and large enterprises, domestic trade, cooperatives, and industrial parks.
- To date, PRODUCE has responded to requests from thirteen (13) OECD committees: Fiscal Affairs, Trade, Statistics and Statistical Policy, Investment, Regional Development Policy, Science and Technology Policy, Digital Economy Policy, Consumer Policy, Regulatory Policy, Chemicals and Biotechnology, Fisheries, SMEs and Entrepreneurship, and Environmental Policy.
- The instruments used to provide information to the OECD include Questionnaires, Self-Assessments, and Reports.
