January – May 2025: Situational Report on the Artisanal Fishing Sector

Between January and May 2025, artisanal fish landings reached a total of 577 thousand metric tons (MT), marking a 65.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024 (349 thousand MT). This growth was largely driven by higher catches of jumbo squid (+231.7%), jack mackerel (+87.9%), mackerel (+10.6%), seaweed (+47.9%), mullet (+32.8%), anchovy for direct human consumption (+522.3%), shark (+4.0%), and hake (+35.8%). However, landings of certain species declined, including bonito (-24.3%) and mahi mahi (-80.8%).
