Mahi-mahi is the country’s second-largest artisanal fishery, ranking just behind jumbo flying squid. This fishery is exclusively artisanal, generating local income and providing jobs for more than 9,000 families. The harvesting of this resource supplies fish for domestic consumption and serves as raw material for the industrial sector in the production of frozen products. Mahi-mahi is highly seasonal, with peak catches occurring from October to February, when volumes exceed the annual average.
