This sector is particularly relevant due to its agro-industrial value chain. In the agricultural sphere, cocoa is one of the country’s main industrial crops, as it is present in sixteen of Peru’s twenty-four regions. Between 2014 and 2023, agricultural cocoa production increased at an average annual rate of 8.8%, reaching 166,735 metric tons in the final year of the period. In addition, in 2023, the industrial business structure of the cocoa and cocoa derivatives sector was heavily concentrated in microenterprises (93.9%), particularly those classified as subsistence microenterprises.
